Collection: Anthias Fish
Anthias Fish – The Colorful Gems of the Reef
Anthias are among the most vibrant and active fish in the marine aquarium trade, known for their dazzling colors, schooling behavior, and peaceful nature. These mid-sized reef fish belong to the Serranidae family, making them relatives of groupers and basslets. Unlike their larger cousins, Anthias are planktivorous shoaling fish that thrive in groups, constantly darting through the water column in search of zooplankton.
Why Are Anthias So Popular?
✔ Incredible Color Variations – From fiery oranges and deep purples to soft pinks and electric yellows, Anthias come in a variety of breathtaking colors.
✔ Active & Engaging Behavior – Unlike many reef fish that stay near the rocks, Anthias swim openly in the water column, bringing energy to any tank.
✔ Reef-Safe & Peaceful – Ideal for mixed reef aquariums, Anthias do not harm corals and are generally non-aggressive when kept in proper groups.
✔ Unique Shoaling Fish – In nature, they form large groups with a single dominant male. In aquariums, this social dynamic can be recreated, adding natural behavior to your display.
Natural Habitat & Behavior
Anthias are found in tropical reefs across the Indo-Pacific, Red Sea, and Atlantic Ocean, typically in deeper waters where they hover in the current, feeding on planktonic organisms. In the wild, they are structured in harems, where one male leads a group of females. Interestingly, Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning that if the dominant male is lost, the most dominant female will transition into a male!

Wild-Caught vs. Captive-Bred Anthias
At YoCamron’s Aquatics, we offer both wild-caught and captive-bred Anthias. While wild-caught specimens display full adult coloration and natural behaviors, they often require careful acclimation and a high-flow, oxygen-rich environment. Captive-bred Anthias are hardier, readily accept prepared foods, and have a higher survival rate in aquariums.
Whether you’re looking for a single showpiece fish or a dynamic group to bring life to your reef, Anthias are a must-have for any marine aquarist. Explore our selection at YoCamron’s Aquatics and experience the beauty of these reef jewels today!
