Passer Angelfish (Holacanthus passer) – The Majestic King of the Aquarium

If you’re seeking a vibrant and commanding presence for your marine aquarium, look no further than the Passer Angelfish, also known as the King Angelfish. Renowned for its striking coloration and bold personality, this species is sure to become the centerpiece of any aquatic display.

Stunning Appearance

The Passer Angelfish boasts a brilliant blue body adorned with a contrasting white vertical stripe behind the gill cover. Its dorsal and caudal fins are highlighted with vibrant yellow and orange hues, creating a captivating visual contrast. As juveniles, they display a darker blue coloration with lighter vertical bands, transitioning to their full adult splendor as they mature.

Behavior and Compatibility

Known for their hardy nature, Passer Angelfish can adapt well to aquarium life when provided with ample space and proper care. However, they can exhibit territorial and aggressive behaviors, especially as they grow. It’s advisable to house them with other semi-aggressive tank mates and introduce them as the last addition to minimize territorial disputes. Due to their size and temperament, they are best suited for experienced aquarists.

Dietary Needs

As omnivores, Passer Angelfish thrive on a varied diet:

• Meaty Foods: Offer chunks of krill, raw shrimp, squid, clams, and mussels to satisfy their protein requirements.

• Vegetable Matter: Incorporate foods rich in Spirulina and marine algae to mimic their natural grazing habits.

• Specialized Angelfish Preparations: Provide high-quality foods formulated with sponge matter to support their nutritional needs.

Feeding multiple times daily ensures they receive balanced nutrition and remain active and healthy.

Aquarium Requirements

Given their potential to reach over a foot in length, Passer Angelfish require spacious environments:

• Tank Size: A minimum of 250 gallons is recommended to accommodate their growth and territorial nature.

• Environment: Provide ample swimming space complemented by live rock formations for grazing and hiding spots.

• Water Parameters: Maintain stable conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, salinity between 1.023-1.026, and temperatures ranging from 72-78°F.

It’s important to note that Passer Angelfish may nip at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles, making them less suitable for reef aquariums. A fish-only setup or a carefully planned community tank is ideal.
