Assorted Painted Glass Fish
The transparency underlying every glassfish comes down to a near-total lack of the reflective guanine platelets that give most fish scales their shine — skin, muscle, even organs are left visible because there's so little in the way to scatter light. The bright colors on this particular batch aren't natural, though; they're dye injected under the skin, a practice we're always upfront about with customers, since it fades over time and the fish looks just as interesting in its plain transparent form.
