Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus)
Clown loaches carry a hidden weapon under each eye: a needle-sharp suborbital spine that flicks out and locks in place, which is exactly why hobbyists learn to net them with care. New owners often panic to find one lying motionless on its side or even upside-down on the substrate — that's a normal nap, not an emergency, and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed "problems" in the hobby. Slow-growing but genuinely long-lived, they crack snail shells with pharyngeal teeth tucked in the throat rather than the jaw.
Care level: Moderate · Temperament: Peaceful, shoaling · Max size: ~12" (slow-growing) · Min tank: 75+ gal (adult) · Diet: Omnivore, sinking pellets + snails
