Freshwater Flounder
Every flatfish starts out as a normal, symmetrical, upright-swimming larva with one eye on each side of the head — the lopsided, both-eyes-on-top look only develops during a dramatic metamorphosis where one eye physically migrates across the skull to join the other. What's left is a fish built to lie flat and motionless on the substrate, using that skyward-facing pair of eyes to track prey passing overhead while the rest of the body stays camouflaged and buried.
Care level: Moderate · Temperament: Peaceful, predatory to small fish · Max size: ~7" · Min tank: 30 gal, sand substrate · Diet: Carnivore, live/frozen foods
