Fritz Mardel Maracyn 2 — Minocycline Antibiotic Treatment
Active ingredient: Minocycline (second-generation tetracycline antibiotic)
Minocycline is a bacteriostatic antibiotic — it blocks bacterial protein synthesis at the 30S ribosomal subunit, halting replication and allowing the fish's immune system to clear the infection. Its coverage is primarily gram-negative, targeting the bacteria responsible for the most common serious bacterial infections in freshwater and marine fish.

What Maracyn 2 Does NOT Treat
- Gram-positive infections — minocycline coverage is primarily gram-negative; use Fritz Maracyn (erythromycin) for gram-positive pathogens such as Streptococcus spp.
- Fish tuberculosis (Mycobacterium spp.) — resistant to minocycline and all aquarium antibiotics; no cure exists in aquarium settings. Do not use Maracyn 2 for suspected wasting disease or progressive emaciation.
- Parasites, fungi, or viruses — no activity against these pathogens
Clinical Presentations
- Fin rot: Gram-negative bacteria (Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium) almost always invade as secondary opportunists following physical injury, aggression, or degraded water quality. Correcting the underlying cause is essential — medication alone will not prevent recurrence.
- Popeye (exophthalmia): Unilateral (one eye) is typically physical injury and may resolve with good water conditions. Bilateral (both eyes) indicates systemic gram-negative infection requiring a full 5-day treatment course.
- Dropsy: Systemic bacterial infection presenting as raised scales ("pinecone" appearance) and distended abdomen due to fluid accumulation in the body cavity. Prognosis is poor even with early treatment; Maracyn 2 is the appropriate antibiotic choice but cannot reverse organ damage already sustained.
- Columnaris: Can progress within hours, especially at higher temperatures. Do not raise water temperature as you would for ich — elevated temp accelerates Flavobacterium columnare significantly.
Treatment Protocol
- Remove activated carbon and all chemical filtration media before dosing — carbon absorbs minocycline and will render the treatment ineffective
- Dose once daily for 5 consecutive days; complete the full course even if symptoms resolve early
- Incomplete treatment promotes antibiotic resistance and risks relapse
- Perform a 25% water change and replace carbon after the 5-day course is complete
- Biological filtration (nitrifying bacteria) is generally safe at recommended doses — minocycline is bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal and has limited impact on established nitrogen cycles
Invertebrate Safety
Not safe for shrimp or snails. Remove all invertebrates to a separate container before starting treatment. Do not return them until 48 hours after the final dose and after performing a water change.
