Gold Clown Knife (Chitala ornata)
This gold form is a case of xanthism, a naturally occurring but uncommon pigment condition where dark melanin production is suppressed while other pigments persist — distinct from full albinism, which knocks out pigment production almost entirely. Ornamental breeders identified and stabilized the trait in clown knife populations, turning a rare wild variant into a consistent color strain. A dramatic centerpiece option for larger tanks we occasionally set up for New Milford customers.
Care level: Moderate · Temperament: Peaceful, predatory to small fish · Max size: ~35" · Min tank: 180+ gal (adult) · Diet: Carnivore, live/frozen foods
