Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish (Genicanthus semifasciatus) - Female

Like its Genicanthus relatives, the Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish spends its time hovering in open water above the reef picking plankton from the current rather than guarding a patch of coral — genuinely unusual behavior for an angelfish family better known for territorial standoffs. This mature female wears soft, pastel coloring and an elegant swallow-tail fin shape that gives the species its name. Peaceful for an angelfish and reef safe with caution.
