Wallago catfish are clocked among the fastest ambush strikes of any freshwater fish, closing an elongated, streamlined body on prey in a fraction of a second from a dead stop. This marbled form spends most of the day motionless in cover, conserving that burst of speed for the one moment it actually needs it.
