Polypterus Senegalus
Senegal bichirs are the gateway drug of the genus, and for good reason: exceptionally tolerant of imperfect water conditions, capable of recovering well from fin and skin injuries that would sideline more delicate fish, and often living twenty-plus years in captivity when given reasonable care. It's the bichir most keepers cut their teeth on before working up to the genus's larger, pricier oddballs.
Care level: Easy · Temperament: Peaceful with larger tankmates · Max size: ~14" · Min tank: 55 gal · Diet: Carnivore, live/frozen/sinking meaty foods
