Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula)

The dark mask across its eyes gives the Raccoon Butterflyfish its name and does the same job a real raccoon's mask might: breaking up the outline of the eye so a predator can't get an easy read on which way the fish is actually facing. It's also more of a night owl than most reef fish, staying active later into the evening and tucking into a crevice to sleep once the lights finally go down. Hardy for the family and a good stepping-stone butterflyfish for a first-timer.
