Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum)
Arowana belong to the Osteoglossidae, literally "bony tongues," a reference to a genuine toothed structure on the tongue that bites against teeth lining the roof of the mouth — an unusual feeding mechanism found in one of the oldest living groups of bony fish. Males are also mouthbrooders, carrying fertilized eggs and newly hatched fry safely inside the mouth until they're developed enough to fend for themselves. A serious centerpiece fish for the rare New Milford-area tank big enough to house one.
Care level: Moderate · Temperament: Semi-aggressive, predatory · Max size: ~36"+ · Min tank: 250+ gal (adult) · Diet: Carnivore, live/frozen foods
