Starfire Red GLO Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii)

GloFish started as a pollution biosensor, zebrafish spliced with a fluorescent protein gene from jellyfish or coral so researchers could watch the color respond to waterborne toxins, before anyone thought to sell the tech as a pet. This pearl gourami carries that same inserted gene, a true, heritable genetic modification rather than a dye, expressed here as a saturated electric red glowing through the species' usual soft speckled pattern. Every bit as gentle and easygoing as a standard pearl gourami underneath the color.
