Gold Tiger Pleco

The gold tones on this pleco come largely from carotenoid pigments packed into cells called xanthophores — pigments the fish can't synthesize itself and has to obtain through diet, the same basic mechanism that turns flamingos pink from a shrimp-heavy diet. A varied diet with some color-supporting foods helps keep those golden tones vibrant over time.
