Niger Triggerfish (Odonus niger)
Odonus niger schools by the hundreds over reef drop-offs in the wild, picking plankton from the current in loose aggregations — a far cry from the solitary, rock-guarding stereotype most triggerfish fit. The common name comes from a set of red teeth that stay mostly hidden until the fish flashes them, usually during a territorial dispute with a tankmate that got too close. Iridescent blue-green and noticeably more reef-tolerant than its more aggressive cousins, though "tolerant" still comes with an asterisk.
Care level: Moderate · Temperament: Semi-aggressive · Max size: ~15" · Min tank: 125+ gal · Diet: Carnivore, meaty foods
