Wolf Fish (Hoplias sp.)

Wolf fish are ambush specialists built around an explosive burst rather than sustained speed — a mouth full of visible, interlocking teeth clamping down in a fraction of a second on anything that wanders too close to cover. Several Hoplias species can also tolerate seriously low-oxygen water, letting them hang on in isolated, stagnant pools that strand and kill off less tolerant fish during the dry season.
